Roddick wins in straight sets in Brisbane

BRISBANE, Australia, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- No. 2-seeded Andy Roddick kicked off his 2011 tennis season with a straight-set win Monday in first-round play of the Brisbane International in Australia.

Roddick lost his serve once in a 6-3, 6-2 victory over homestanding Marinko Matosevic. Roddick took 77 percent of the points on serve and took half of the points when Matosevic served. Roddick ended up with four service breaks in eight games.

Florian Mayer, the No. 7-seed, routed another Australian, dumping Bernard Tomic 6-2, 6-2 in 55 minutes. Mayer lost only three points over eight service games and cashed in four of the five break-point situations he forced on Tomic.

Michael Berrer rallied with a 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win over Dudi Sela in the only match on Monday's schedule that went three sets.

In other first-round matches, Santiago Giraldo defeated Gilles Simons 6-2, 6-3; Lukasz Kubot cruised by Daniel Brands 6-2, 6-2; and Alexandr Dolgopolov ousted Igor Andreev 6-4, 6-2.
