NHL: Philadelphia 3, Detroit 2

DETROIT, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- James van Riemsdyk, Dan Carcillo and Scott Hartnell each scored second-period goals Sunday in the Philadelphia Flyers' 3-2 win over Detroit.

Brian Boucher stopped 25-of-27 shots in the victory, the Flyers' first win in Detroit since 1988. Philadelphia had gone 0-16-2 at Joe Louis Arena since then -- a record that includes two losses in the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals.

The victory allowed the Flyers to pull into a tie with Pittsburgh atop the Atlantic Division with 53 points, and to match the Penguins and the Red Wings with the best overall record in the NHL.

Detroit got third-period goals from Valtteri Filppula and Henrik Zetterberg. Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard was pulled after allowing three goals on 27 shots over two periods.
