Bills sign Merriman to 2-year contract

BUFFALO, N.Y., Jan. 1 (UPI) -- The Buffalo Bills said Saturday they have signed injured linebacker Shawne Merriman to a new contract.

The Bills didn't release the terms of the deal, but multiple media reports indicated it was for two years.

Merriman came to Buffalo after the Bills claimed him off waivers from San Diego in early November. He was idled due to calf and Achilles injuries after Oct. 10 and didn't play a down after he was obtained by the Bills.

The Chargers had placed the linebacker on injured reserve Oct. 13 with a minor-injury designation. For the season, Merriman, 26, collected just six tackles in three games.

Merriman racked up 231 tackles, 43 1/2 sacks and one interception with the Chargers in 60 games over six seasons.
