SEMMERING, Austria, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Tessa Worley of France took first place and Germany placed second and third in Tuesday's women's World Cup giant slalom in Semmering, Austria.
Worley turned in a combined-run time of 2:09.66 to edge out Maria Riesch and Kathrin Hoezl.
Riesch's second-place finish in 2:10.28 moved her back atop the season standings in the event ahead of American Lindsey Vonn. Vonn placed seventh in Tuesday's event. Fellow American Julia Mancuso placed fifth behind Elisabeth Goergl of Austria.
Hoezl, the defending World Cup GS champion, turned in a 2:10.44 time despite skiing with an injured back.
"I didn't even want to take part because I thought I wouldn't be competitive enough," she said. "I felt a sharp stabbing pain in my back while I was preparing for the race and I couldn't move any more."
