Swiss place first, third in men's downhill

VAL GARDENA, Italy, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Switzerland's Sylvan Zubriggen won Saturday's men's downhill in Italy by 6/100ths of a second for his first World Cup victory.

Zubriggen flew down the Saslong course at Val Gardena in 1 minute, 57.21 seconds to edge Austria's Romed Baumann and third-place finisher Didier Cuche of Switzerland.

Ten of the top 30 finishers started late in the racing order. "We had some fresh snow Friday, so it was a matter of finding the polished part," said American Steven Nyman, who finished in 18th place. "If you stayed on the polished part, you could make up time. Anyone could attack from the back and win this thing."

Bode Miller was the top U.S. skier. He finished in 17th, 1/100th of a tick ahead of Nyman.

A number of Saturday's competitors are entered in Sunday's World Cup giant slalom in nearby Alta Badia.
