Goosen shares South African Open lead

DURBAN, South Africa, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Retief Goosen and Alex Cejka both shot 8-under-par 64 and share the lead after Friday's completion of the first round of the European Tour's South African Open.

The tournament barely began Thursday before heavy rains caused a stoppage of play. The first round was completed Friday and the second round is to be played Saturday. Tournament officials said they plan to wrap up the tournament with 36 holes Sunday although there is rain the forecast through the weekend.

Goosen had six birdies, two eagles and two bogeys in his first round while Cejka shot 32 on each side in a bogey-free round. They are one stroke ahead of Ernie Els and Charl Schwartzel, who each had first rounds of 7-under 65. Goosen, Els and Schwartzel are all playing in their home country

Six other golfers are just two strokes off the pace.

Goosen played the second nine first in the opening round and had three consecutive birdies from 12-14. He had a bogey at the 17th but came back with an eagle at the par-4, 273-yard 18th.

He added a birdie at the first hole and got his second eagle of the day at the 512-yard par-5 third hole. He made it to 9-under with birdies at five and six but ended his round with a bogey.

Cejka was 1-under after five holes before running off three consecutive birdies. His rides on the second nine came at Nos. 10, 13, 15 and 18.
