DETROIT, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre will not play in Monday's game, the team said, ending his NFL-record streak of 297 straight games played.

Favre was listed as inactive due to a sprained sternocavicular joint in his throwing (right) shoulder, as the Vikings prepared to face the New York Giants in Detroit, snapping the league's longest-ever string of consecutive games played.

Favre, 41, hurt the shoulder Dec. 5 when he was leveled by Buffalo's Arthur Moats during a pass attempt. Quarterback Tavaris Jackson will get his first start for the Vikes since 2008.

Favre, who has said this will be his final season, began the streak Sept. 27, 1992, with the Green Bay Packers after coming in to relieve an injured Don Majkowksi, the (Minneapolis Star) Tribune noted.
