Yankees made official offer to Cliff Lee

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Dec. 8 (UPI) -- The New York Yankees have made an official offer to free-agent pitcher Cliff Lee, General Manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday at baseball's winter meetings.

Cashman didn't reveal how much he offered the star left-handed starter, but the New York Post reported it was for six years and worth between $137.5 million and $150 million.

"We made an offer," Cashman told the Post. "It's not like he didn't want to take an offer. He is trying to put himself in the position where he has all the offers out there."

The Yankees and Lee's current team, the Texas Rangers, are considered the front-runners for the 32-year-old hurler, who posted a 3.18 ERA over 28 starts in 2010 and helped pitch Texas into the World Series.

Lee's agent, Darek Braunecker, conducted meetings with the two teams as well as with the Washington Nationals before leaving Florida Wednesday, the newspaper said.
