Moore Wins HK Jockey Challenge

HONG KONG, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- England's Ryan Moore captured Wednesday's Cathay Pacific International Jockeys' Championship with two wins in the four qualifying races.

Moore, also the recent winner of the World Super Jockeys Series in Japan, took the first race at Happy Valley Racecourse on Hong Kong Island aboard Something Special, rallying boldly along the outside to catch Jolly Wongchoy in the final strides. Moore then won the final race, again with a late, outside move, while riding Fearless.

The wins gave Moore 24 points in the competition. Hong Kong-based Douglas Whyte was second.

Moore, who tied for the title last year at Happy Valley, said, "It is really nice to win this event on my very own this time, especially as I didn't think I had much chance coming into it."

Moore is more confident, with reason, about his mounts in the Cathay Pacific championship races Sunday at Sha Tin. With mounts in all four events, he will ride the well-fancied Paco Boy and Snow Fairy, in the Mile and the Cup, respectively.
