Diamondbacks sign reliever J.J. Putz

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed free-agent relief pitcher J.J. Putz to a two-year deal, FoxSports.com reported Monday.

The broadcaster said the deal to bring the 32-year-old, right-handed reliever to the Diamondbacks in contingent on his passing a physical exam.

Putz had a good year with the Chicago White Sox last season, going 7-5 with a 2.83 ERA out of the bullpen after missing most of the 2009 campaign with the New York Mets due to a bone spur in his right elbow.

It's likely Putz will become the D-Backs' closer. Arizona's bullpen was among the worst in baseball last season with a composite ERA of 5.74 and 24 blown saves.

The signing capped a busy day for the D-Backs at baseball's winter meetings in Florida. Also Monday, they traded third baseman Mark Reynolds to Baltimore for two pitchers and signed third baseman Melvin Mora.
