COOPERSTOWN, N.Y., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Former Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies executive Pat Gillick was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame Monday, officials said.
Gillick, who spent 27 years as general manager and built World Series winners in both cities, received the necessary 75 percent vote from the 16-member Expansion Era Committee to gain admittance.
Eleven other ballot nominees, including the late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, failed to garner the necessary support in the voting.
Gillick assembled the Blue Jays teams that won back-to-back World Series titles in 1992 and '93, and was the guiding force behind the 2008 World Series champion Phillies.
Gillick joins only three other individuals in the Cooperstown, N.Y., shrine elected nearly exclusively as team architects, joining Ed Barrow, Branch Rickey and George Weiss in that regard.
