Portis out for the year

WASHINGTON, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- The Washington Redskins announced Wednesday they had placed running back Clinton Portis on injured reserve with a groin injury that requires surgery.

Portis, who needs 77 rushing yards to reach 10,000 for his career, has had a season cut short for the second straight year. He missed the last eight games in 2009 because of a concussion.

Washington Coach Mike Shanahan said Wednesday Portis, 29, would have surgery to repair his latest injury and the running back would have to refrain from all football activities for several months.

The season-ending groin injury occurred during Washington's game with Tennessee last Sunday. He had suffered a groin strain in Week 4 against Philadelphia.

He carried just 54 times in five games this season for 227 yards and two touchdowns.
