ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Christy Martin, called the first superstar in women's boxing history, was recovering from gunshot and stab wounds Wednesday, Florida authorities said.
Orange County, Fla., sheriff's officials said they were seeking Martin's husband in connection with a Tuesday incident in which police said the injured ex-boxer flagged down a passing motorist for help, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
Sheriff's spokesman Jim Solomons said in a press release that Martin, 42, of Apopka, Fla., was taken by the motorist to Florida Hospital in Orlando where she was treated for several gunshot and stab wounds.
Authorities are now seeking her husband Jim, whom the newspaper said has acted as Martin's trainer and publicist for years.
Martin appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in April 1996 with the headline "The Lady Is a CHAMP" after signing with fight promoter Don King in the early 1990s.
She was a popular pay-per-view attraction and once boxed on an undercard for Mike Tyson, the Sentinel said.
