TORONTO, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Jonas Gustavsson made the most of another start Thursday by stopping 29 shots and leading the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-1 victory over New Jersey.
Gustavsson has been forced into action due to a groin injury suffered by Jean-Sebastien Giguere. It was Gustavsson's seventh appearance of the season and this was his second win.
It was Toronto's second victory in a row following an eight-game losing streak.
Toronto's Mikhail Grabovski broke a scoreless tie 1:42 into the second period with a power-play goal and Phil Kessel boosted the lead at the 7:29 mark.
Dainius Zubrus tipped in a shot midway through the period for New Jersey, but Kris Versteeg's score on the power play with 6:43 remaining in the third gave the Maple Leafs some insurance.
Toronto's Ron Wilson moved into seventh place on the NHL's all-time victory list with his 589th win. He passed Jacques Lemaire, who coached for New Jersey, Minnesota and Montreal.
Martin Brodeur gave up two goals on 20 shots before leaving with an undisclosed injury in the second period. Jonas Hedberg allowed the goal by Versteeg. It was New Jersey's fourth loss in five games.
