NHL: Colorado 5, Columbus 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Greg Mauldin scored shorthanded for his first career goal Friday, putting the Colorado Avalanche in front en route to a 5-1 victory over Columbus.

The Avalanche scored three times in the second period after opening the stanza in a 1-1 deadlock.

Mauldin's goal came 10:57 into the second and was followed by scores from Philippe Dupuis and Paul Stastny.

David Jones produced the first and last goals for Colorado, which has won four out of six.

Peter Budaj made 28 saves for the win. Colorado has downed Columbus in both their meetings this season.

The only Columbus goal came from Antoine Vermette. Steve Mason gave up five goals on 29 shots.

This was the first game in a stretch of six over nine days for the Avalanche.
