Lions QB Stafford won't need surgery

DETROIT, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford doesn't need surgery after reinjuring his throwing shoulder, Coach Jim Schwartz said Monday.

Stafford was hurt when tripped from behind in the first half of the Lions' loss to the New York Jets Sunday. He had injured the same shoulder in Detroit's first game of the year, causing him to miss five contests.

But Stafford's new injury isn't related to the right shoulder separation he suffered earlier, and thus the signal-caller won't need season-ending surgery, Schwartz told The Detroit News.

"He hurt the same shoulder, but from all accounts and from speaking to the doctors, it's not an aggravation of the old injury," Schwartz said. "It's a new injury. The old injury was healed and he was just as likely to hurt that shoulder as he was the other one."

Team is not looking to shut Stafford down for the year, but the News reported it is unlikely he'll play in the Lions' game against Buffalo Sunday.
