SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Kelly Slater clinched his record 10th Association of Surfing Professionals title Saturday by advancing at the Rip Curl Search Puerto Rico.

The venerable 38-year-old American scored enough points to put the 2010 season title out of reach of 22-year-old South African Jordy Smith.

"It's nice to win this in Puerto Rico with my friends and family here," Slater said. "I haven't been surfing here on this part of the island since '88 and I used to come here a lot. This was like a second home to me."

Slater has won three times on the ASP tour this season and finished second twice. He dedicated his title to fellow surfer Andy Irons, who died unexpectedly earlier this week.
