Allen grabs 1-shot Charles Schwab lead

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Michael Allen notched five birdies for a personal-best 10-under-par 61 Saturday, securing the third-round lead of the Charles Schwab Cup event.

Allen completed three rounds of the season-ending Champions Tour event at 14-under 199, moving one shot ahead of defending champion John Cook at Harding Park in San Francisco.

The 51-year-old Allen, who is battling to keep his PGA Tour privileges, is looking for his second victory on the seniors circuit. He won his very first tour appearance at last year's Senior PGA Championship.

Cook, however, hung tough, with only a missed 6-foot birdie putt at the 18th hole separating him from a share of the lead. He shot a 67, finishing the day one behind at 13-under 200.

Sole possession of third place belonged to David Frost (65) at minus-12. Knotted in fourth at 10-under 203 were Bernhard Langer (67), Russ Cochran (68) and Tom Lehman (69).

Langer's 54-hole performance should ensure his claim on the season-long Charles Schwab Cup and its $1 million bonus.
