EDMONTON, Alberta, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Jimmy Howard stopped 24 shots while allowing only a power-play goal in the second period Friday, carrying the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-1 victory over Edmonton.
Detroit won its third straight and Howard captured his fifth consecutive start. Detroit's 17 points are the most in the Western Conference.
Justin Abdelkader scored 1:45 into the contest for Detroit and Edmonton tied it when Taylor Hall delivered on a slapshot that beat Howard 5:26 into the second.
Valtteri Filppula scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal on the power play midway through the second and Daniel Cleary produced an empty netter with 21 seconds remaining in the third.
Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 25-of-27 shots to take the loss. Edmonton has only three wins this season, tied with Buffalo for the fewest in the NHL.
