BUFFALO, N.Y., Nov. 3 (UPI) -- The Buffalo Bills were awarded former San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman off waivers Wednesday, the team said.

Bills General Manager Buddy Nix said his team, which had the first right to claim the three-time Pro Bowl veteran thanks to their 0-7 record, will benefit from Merriman's skills.

"We think Shawne can help our defense so we claimed him," Nix said. "He has been an impact player in the 3-4 defense and we feel this is a good opportunity to make our team better."

Merriman, a six-year veteran, was placed on the injured reserve list with a minor-injury designation last month, putting him in position to be released once he and the team agreed he was healthy.

Merriman has been limited to six tackles in three games this season. During his 60-game career, Merriman has racked up 231 tackles, 43 1/2 sacks and one interception.
