NFL: New England 23, San Diego 20

By

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Stephen Gostkowski kicked three field goals and the New England Patriots survived a furious fourth-quarter San Diego rally Sunday in their 23-20 win.

Gostkowski's last field goal, a 35-yarder with 11:27 remaining, gave the Patriots a 23-6 lead, and that would prove to be the difference as the Chargers scored 14 straight points down the stretch, turning the contest into a nail-biter.

After Phillip Rivers connected on a 4-yard TD pass to Antonio Gates and Mike Tolbert cut New England's lead to three with a 1-yard scoring plunge, Kris Brown's 50-yard field goal attempt in the closing seconds bounced off the upright and New England (5-1) escaped with the win.

Tom Brady went 19-of-32 for 159 yards and a touchdown for the Patriots, who were held to only 179 total yards of offense.

Rivers completed 34-of-50 pass attempts for 336 yards, one TD and one interception for San Diego (2-6).

Patrick Crayton hauled down seven passes for 82 yards and Darren Sproles collected nine catches for 70 yards in the setback.
