COL FB: Auburn 24, LSU 17

AUBURN, Ala., Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Onterio McCalebb scored on a 70-yard touchdown run with 5:05 remaining Saturday, boosting No. 5 Auburn to a 24-17 decision over No. 6 Louisiana State.

The game's honors, however, went to quarterback Cam Newton, who rambled for a career-high 217 yards on 28 carries for Auburn (8-0, 5-0 SEC) -- in the process becoming the SEC's single-season rushing leader for quarterbacks.

Newton also scored twice on the ground to break the Tigers' record for combined running/passing scores in a single season at 27. He went 10-of-16 passing and the Tigers amassed 440 rushing yards in a potent ground attack.

They started the season at 8-0 for the first time since 2004.

LSU (7-1, 4-1) was knocked from the ranks of the undefeated after seven straight victories. Jordan Jefferson completed 7-of-14 passes for 46 yards and carried 16 times for 74 yards in the defeat.

The victory bodes well for Auburn, as the winner of this game has gone on to claim the SEC West Division title six times in the last 10 seasons.
