Wawrinka among early winners in Stockholm

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- No. 5-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka swept through a first-round victory Monday at the Stockholm Open tennis tournament in Sweden.

Wawrinka dumped Andreas Seppi 6-2, 6-2 by saving six of seven break-point chances. He forced Seppi into 16 break points and was able to finish off five of them. He lost 16 points over eight service games.

Wild-card entrant Michael Ryderstedt got by Daniel Gimeno-Traver 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, using the only service break of the match to win the second set.

Also Monday, Jarkko Nieminen was on the court nearly 2 hours in taking a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 decision from Michael Berrer.

Roger Federer, who just moved to No. 2 in the world, and No. 5-ranked Robin Soderling are the tournament's top two seeds. The Stockholm Open carries a purse of about $838,000 with the winner's check totaling about $134,000.
