CARLSBAD, Calif., Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Police say former NFL star Junior Seau apparently drove his SUV off a 30-foot cliff near San Diego Monday following an arrest in a domestic violence case.

Seau, a Pro Bowl linebacker who played 13 seasons for the San Diego Chargers and had brief stints with Miami and the New England Patriots, suffered minor injuries in the bizarre crash, police in Carlsbad told KGTV-TV, San Diego.

A witness told KGTV she saw Seau's Cadillac Escalade go off a cliff that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Television images showed the sport-utility vehicle upside down on the beach.

The Miami Herald said Seau's car was 30 feet below the roadway.

The incident apparently began late Sunday when police in neighboring Oceanside, Seau's hometown, arrested him on a charge of suspicion of felony spousal assault with an injury involving his live-in girlfriend.

He posted bail at the San Diego County jail in Vista Monday morning.

The North County Times said Seau had been inducted into the Oceanside High School hall of fame Saturday.
