Texas court halts Liverpool FC sale

LONDON, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- The expected sale of the Liverpool FC soccer club to the owners of the Boston Red Sox hit a snag Wednesday with an order from a Texas court.

The club's current American owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, successfully obtained a temporary injunction that has put the sale of the financially ailing club to New England Sports Ventures on hold, The Financial Times reported.

Hicks and Gillett are battling an attempt by the club's board chairman, Martin Broughton, to make the sale to NESV, claiming they will lose more than $100 million on the deal.

The debt-laden duo face a Friday deadline to repay a $377 million loan to the Royal Bank of Scotland that could put the club into receivership if the payment isn't met.

The Financial Times said the injunction from the Dallas court was received only moments before Broughton began a board meeting in London to approve the sale to NESV.

Liverpool FC issued a statement saying the sale will go on despite the ruling.

"The independent directors consider the restraining order to be unwarranted and damaging and will move as swiftly as possible to seek to have it removed," it said.
