NHL: Washington 2, N.Y. Islanders 1

WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Nicklas Backstrom scored on the power play with 3:39 left in regulation Wednesday, lifting Washington to a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders.

The Capitals have won three straight, all at home.

Alex Ovechkin assisted on Backstrom's game-winner and scored Washington's first goal with 1:41 to play in the second period. Ovechkin has seven points in Washington's four games.

Nino Niederreiter produced New York's goal 3:14 into the contest.

Michal Neuvirth, who made 22 appearances during his previous two years with the Capitals, has started all four games this season and made 23 saves to get the win.

Dwayne Roloson stopped 24 shots for the Islanders, who suffered their first regulation loss of the season.

Backstrom's goal came while Blake Comeau was in the penalty box for roughing.
