Gasquet, Mayer win twice in Shanghai

SHANGHAI, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Mischa Zverev and Richard Gasquet both advanced to the third round of the Shanghai Masters with upset victories Wednesday.

Zverev capped a long day's action by ousting sixth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) behind conversions of three of four break-point opportunities.

Gasquet was among players who had first-round matches postponed by rain Tuesday and so played twice Wednesday. He beat Ernests Gulbis 6-1, 6-4 in a first-round match and then took out 15th-seeded Gael Monfils 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Gasquet saved five break points in the third set in holding Monfils off.

Three other seeded players exited the draw Wednesday. No. 8-seeded Mikhail Youzhny fell to Florian Mayer, who also won a first-round match Wednesday, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 and 10th-seeded Andy Roddick suffered a groin injury and retired after building a 6-3, 2-3 lead over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez while Andreas Seppi beat No. 14 Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-2 in a first-round match.

The tournament's top five seeds advanced to the third round with straight-sets wins. World No. 1 Rafael Nadal edged Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4; 6-4; second-seeded Novak Djokovic topped Ivan Ljubicic 6-3, 6-3; No. 3 Roger Federer didn't face a break point in beating John Isner 6-3, 6-4; fourth-seeded Andy Murray defeated Bai Yan 6-2, 6-2; and No. 5 Robin Soderling got by Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

In other matches involving seeded players, No. 11 David Ferrer beat Thomaz Bellucci 7-6 (9-7), 6-3; and 13th-seeded Jurgen Melzer was a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) winner over Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

Also winning second-round matches Wednesday were Juan Monaco, Jeremy Chardy and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga while the final first-round result saw Lu Yan-Hsun defeat Wu Di 6-1, 6-4.
