Liverpool FC battle moves to High Court

LIVERPOOL, England, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- A battle over the ownership of the Liverpool FC soccer club was set Monday to move to British High Court where the team's fate was expected to be decided.

A hearing was scheduled for Tuesday during which Tom Hicks and George Gillett, the team's American owners, have said they will try to derail the sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures, the owners of baseball's Boston Red Sox, CNN reported.

The sale was set up by Martin Broughton, the independent chairman of Liverpool's board, in the face of a looming deadline to repay a $377 million loan to the Royal Bank of Scotland that could put the club into receivership.

Hicks and Gillett contend the negotiated sale price of $477 million is too low and means they will lose $130 million on the deal.

CNN said the pair tried to derail the sale by firing two board members and replacing them loyalists, including Hicks' son Mack. Broughton asserts the bank has authorized only him to make changes to the board.
