Kerr seeks No. 1 ranking in women's golf

PRATTVILLE, Ala., Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Cristie Kerr, who has battled for the top spot in the world rankings throughout the year, took the lead Thursday after one round of the Navistar LPGA Classic.

Kerr shot a 7-under 65 over the Capitol Hill Golf Club course, one shot in front of Morgan Pressel, Dorothy Delasin and Anna Nordqvist.

Going into this week's tournament, Kerr was ranked third in the world behind Ai Miyazato and Jiyai Shin.

Kerr, who briefly held the No. 1 spot during the summer, played a bogey-free round that included four birdies in a five-hole stretch starting at the fifth. She also birdied three of the last four.

Miyazato shot a 70 and was tied for 38th place. Shin is not entered this week, nor is Michelle Wie.

Those at 5-under 67, tied for fifth place, included Giulia Sergas, Brittany Lincicome, Christina Kim and Vicky Hurst.
