ARLINGTON, Texas, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Hideki Matsui smashed a two-run homer for Los Angeles Sunday in a 6-2 Angels victory over the Texas Rangers in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Peter Bourjos contributed a solo shot and Mark Trumbo chipped in a two-run, ninth-inning single for the Angels, who finished a disappointing year at 80-82.
Dan Haren (5-4) notched the victory, surrendering two runs on seven hits while striking out three and issuing no walks over seven innings.
Darren Nippert (4-5), the second of five Texas pitchers, was saddled with the loss.
The American League West champion Rangers finished the season with a 90-72 record and will open the playoffs against the AL East champion Tampa Bay Rays in the Division Series, starting Wednesday in St. Petersburg, Fla.
