Garcia-Lopez advanced to the championship match with a three-set win over world No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the semifinals capping a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win by finishing off his fourth match point opportunity.
The final game had Nieminen serving but Garcia-Lopez had the advantage for much of the 16-point game. Garcia-Lopez got to his fourth match point with a well-executed drop shot and finished off the win with a forehand winner that dropped Nieminen to 1-9 in ATP championship matches.
It was the second career tournament win for Garcia-Lopez, whose other title was in May 2009 in Austria.
He collected nearly $100,000 for the victory. Nieminen took home $52,500.
