Jankovic, Krumm notch Beijing victories

BEIJING, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Jelena Jankovic and Kimiko Date Krumm were among the first-round winners Saturday at the $4.5 million China Open in Beijing.

Jankovic of Serbia, who holds the third seed, got past Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic, 7-5, 7-5. Jankovic won the China Open in 2008 and was runner-up the preceding year.

The 40-year-old Krumm, meanwhile, had little trouble with Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues, 6-0, 6-4 on the hardcourts at the National Tennis Center.

Other first-round winners Saturday included Switzerland's Patty Schnyder, who dispatched Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova, 6-1, 6-4; Ukraine's Alona Bondarenko, who downed Chinese wild card Yi-Miao Zhou, 6-2, 6-0; and Germany's Andrea Petkovic, who breezed past Czech Lucie Safarova, 6-2, 6-3.

Also moving to the second round were Olga Govortsova of Belarus, who eliminated Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, 6-3, 6-2; and Russian Elena Vesnina, who outlasted Hungary's Agnes Szavay, 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 6-3.
