MLB: Chicago Cubs 1, San Diego 0

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Tom Gorzelanny and three relievers combined on a three-hitter Thursday, carrying the Chicago Cubs to a 1-0 win over San Diego.

The Padres fell three games behind division-leading San Francisco in the National League West going into a three-game, season-ending series starting Friday in San Francisco. San Diego must win all three games to force a tie, which would result in a one-game playoff to determine the division champion.

The loss to Chicago Thursday dropped the Padres two games behind idle Atlanta in the race for the wild-card berth. Atlanta concludes its regular season with three games against NL East champ Philadelphia.

Gorzelanny gave up all three San Diego hits over six innings and left with the game scoreless. Andrew Cashner, Sean Marshall and Carlos Marmol then combined to produce three perfect innings.

Marshall (7-5) retired the final two batters in the eighth and got the win when the Cubs scored the game's only run in the ninth.

Marmol earned his 37th save.

Aramis Ramirez singled to open the Chicago ninth against closer Heath Bell (6-1) and Darwin Barney came on as a pinch runner. Xavier Nady moved Barney to second with a sacrifice and he scored the winning run on a single by Brad Snyder.
