MLB: Washington 4, Atlanta 2

WASHINGTON, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Ian Desmond delivered a two-run single in the seventh inning Sunday that lifted the Washington Nationals to a 4-2 victory over Atlanta.

Desmond's key hit made a winner of Sean Burnett (1-7). Burnett tossed two scoreless frames in relief of Livan Hernandez, who went six-plus innings, allowing two runs on seven hits.

The Nats, who also got RBI from Nyjer Morgan and Mike Morse, won for the fifth time in six innings to take the rubber match of their three-game series with the Braves.

Atlanta, losers of five of six, lowered the Philadelphia Phillies' magic number to clinch the National League East to one. The Braves entered the contest one-half game behind San Diego in the NL wild-card chase.

Rick Ankiel drove in both of Atlanta's runs and Kyle Farnsworth (0-2) suffered the loss.
