NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- New Orleans running back Reggie Bush may have suffered a broken leg during the Saints' win Monday in San Francisco.

Bush was injured while trying to recover his own muffed punt in the fourth quarter of Monday night's game. He had to be helped from the field and left the stadium on crutches.

"It was pretty windy. The ball was moving around a little bit when he punted it and at the last second it kind of shifted just enough for me to drop it," said Bush Monday after the game. "I tried to recover it and someone took my leg out. I don't know what happened or how it happened. I just got taken out."

The (New Orleans) Time-Picayune reported Tuesday that Bush had a fracture of the right fibula. The team said additional examinations were scheduled.

Bush last week returned the Heisman Trophy he was awarded after the 2005 college season. He was the target of an NCAA investigation that resulted in a series of sanctions against Southern California.

As a pro, Bush was the second overall selection by the Saints in the 2006 draft. He's played in 54 games, rushing for 1,958 yards and 17 touchdowns and catching 269 passes for 1,997 yards and 12 more scores. He's also returned four punts for touchdowns in his career.
