Pitt player suspended after assault charge

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- A University of Pittsburgh football player is facing aggravated-assault charges for a weekend fight, police said.

Keith Coleman, 20, a reserve offensive lineman, was arraigned and given a non-monetary bond, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported. He will have a preliminary hearing Thursday.

Pitt Coach Dave Wannstedt has suspended Coleman indefinitely. The sophomore had not played in the Panthers' first two games.

Coleman was arrested around 2 a.m. Saturday after a fight with two men, Pittsburgh Police Sgt. James Kohnen said.

Coleman said he punched Brendan Connor and Christopher Harding after they used a racial slur as he walked down the street, a police affidavit states.

But Connor told police he was walking down the street when Coleman approached him and pushed him. He said Coleman punched him several times and put him in a head lock.

Harding told police he saw Coleman attack Connor. When he tried to break up the fight, he said Coleman punched him in the face and slammed him to the ground.

A witness told police Connor went after Coleman and that "he believed Coleman was defending himself."

Harding was hospitalized with a broken collarbone.
