MLB: Philadelphia 7, Washington 6

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Jayson Werth smashed a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday, handing the Philadelphia Phillies a 7-6 win over Washington.

The Phillies trailed 6-3 going into their final at-bat but stunned the Nationals with four runs to complete a three-game series sweep, win their seventh straight and improve to 15-3 in September.

Philadelphia got to within one run when Ryan Howard delivered a two-run single. That was followed by Werth's long fly to straightaway center field off Drew Storen (3-4).

Werth's clout made a winner of Vance Worley (1-1), who gained his first major league win with a scoreless ninth.

The dramatic victory enabled Philadelphia to keep second-place Atlanta three games down in the National League East division race. The two teams will commence a key head-to-head series Monday at Citizens Bank Park.
