LOS ANGELES, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Melvin Mora drove in the go-ahead run in the fourth with one of his two RBI singles Friday and the Colorado Rockies fought off the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-5.
The setback came at the end of a day in which the Dodgers announced Manager Joe Torre would step down next season and be replaced by Don Mattingly.
The Rockies ignored the sensation of that announcement by winning for the 12th time in 14 games. That surge has brought them within 1 1/2 games of San Francisco for the lead in the National League West and to within 1 1/2 games of Atlanta for the top spot in the wild-card race.
It was a 2-2 tie heading into the fourth but Hiroki Kuroda (10-13) gave up singles to Carlos Gonzalez and Todd Helton before Mora singled in Gonzalez to put the Rockies in front for good.
Seth Smith and Miguel Olivo also had RBI singles in the fourth and Mora contributed another run-scoring base hit in the seventh.
Colorado eventually owned a 7-4 advantage going into the ninth and Huston Street came on to pick up his 20th save. He did not do so, however, until he had given up three hits and a run. Street struck out Matt Kemp as the potential winning run to end the game.
The win went to Ubaldo Jimenez (19-6), who survived 6 1/3 innings while giving up four runs on six hits. It was only his second win in his last eight starts.
