GUANGZHOU, China, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Jarmila Groth breezed through her second-round match Thursday at the Guangzhou International Women's Open tennis tournament in China.
Groth defeated Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-1, 6-4 in 67 minutes. Groth blasted 11 aces and had her serve broken just once in the match.
A series of second-round upsets, including a loss Thursday by fourth-seeded Ayumi Morita, has left Groth the only seeded player remaining in the field as the tournament moves to the quarterfinal round Friday.
Edina Gallovits ousted Morita 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Gallovits forced 17 break-point situations and was able to convert six of them.
Also Thursday, Ksenia Pervak was a 7-5, 2-6, 6-0 winner over Alexandra Panova in a seesaw match. Panova piled up four service breaks in the second set but Pervak only lost three points in the third set in securing the win.
Groth goes against Maria Elena Camerin in the quarterfinals while Gallovits will draw Han Xinyun. In the lower half of the bracket, Pervak faces Alla Kudryavtseva and Sania Mirza plays Zhang Shuai.
