No. 2 seed loses at WTA's China tournament

GUANGZHOU, China, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Chan Yung-Jan was defeated in a three-set match Tuesday in first-round play of the Guangzhou International tournament in China.

Ksenia Pervak dropped just two games after losing the first set in knocking out Chan 3-6, 6-0, 6-2. Pervak lost only 12 points in the second set and won 62.5 percent of the points after the first set.

No. 6-seeded Bojana Jovanovski was also a first-round upset victim, losing 6-1, 7-5 to Alla Kudryavtseva.

Three other seeded players, including top-seeded Jarmila Groth, advanced in straight sets. Groth dumped Nina Bratchikova 6-2, 6-0 while No. 4-seeded Ayumi Morita stopped Junri Namigata 6-2, 6-2 and seventh-seeded Alberta Brianti beat Pauline Parmentier 6-3, 6-1.

Chinese wild-card entrant Han Xinyun advanced with a 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 6-1 win over Hsieh Su-Wei but another local favorite, Sun Shengnan, fell to Alexandra Panova 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Also Tuesday, Edina Gallovits got past Kim So-jung 6-7 (4-7), 61, 63; Tamarine Tanasugarn defeated Simona Halep 7-6 (7-4), 6-2; and Sania Mirza topped Katie O'Brien 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.
