Cramer, a lefty who led the Mexican League this season with a 13-3 mark, took the place of the demoted Vin Mazzaro in the A's rotation.

Five Oakland relievers combined to toss 3 2/3 scoreless innings, with Andrew Bailey getting his 24th save despite allowing a pair of base runners in the ninth.

Jack Cust hit his 100th career homer and the A's scored twice on Royals' errors to raise their season record against Kansas City to 6-1.

Luke Hochevar (5-5) absorbed the tough-luck loss, allowing only two unearned runs on two hits in five innings of work.
