Alabama on top but poll has many new teams

MCLEAN, Va., Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Alabama remains the No. 1 college football team in the country but there are five new teams in the USA Today Coaches' Top 25 released Monday.

Alabama again pulled in 55 of the 59 first-place votes, with the other four going to No. 2 Ohio State.

The season is only two weeks old but the poll was given a strong shake-up with Stanford, Michigan, Houston, California and Missouri joining the rankings. Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Georgia and Brigham Young dropped from the Top 25.

All of the ranked teams are 2-0, except for No. 3 Boise State (1-0), which didn't play last week; No. 17 Miami (Fla.) (1-1), which lost to Ohio State; and No. 20 Penn State (1-1), which was beaten by Alabama.

Boise State is just ahead of No. 4 Texas while Texas Christian keeps the No. 5 spot.

Oregon jumped from eighth to sixth, pushing No. 7 Florida and eighth-ranked Nebraska each down a place. Oklahoma is ninth, having switched places with No. 10 Iowa.

Wisconsin kept the No. 11 position but Louisiana State improved from 16th to 12th. Arkansas went from 15th to No. 13, Utah is 14th and Auburn is No. 15. Auburn and Utah were tied for 20th a week ago.

South Carolina leaped nine places to 16th, ahead of Miami. Arizona improved five spots to 18th and previously unranked Stanford is 19th with Penn State 20th.

West Virginia is 21st, after a No. 22 ranking last week. Michigan, Houston, California and Missouri, in order, complete the Top 25.
