MLB: Tampa Bay 9, Toronto 8

TORONTO, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Evan Longoria scored on a throwing error by shortstop Yunel Escobar in the ninth inning Friday, giving the Tampa Bay Rays a 9-8 win over Toronto.

The Rays scored six times in the first and had an 8-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. Toronto then produced four homers accounting for seven runs to tie it -- two of the blasts being the 45th and 46th of the year by Jose Bautista.

Kevin Gregg (1-5) came on in the ninth for Toronto and issued back-to-back, one-out walks to Longoria and Carlos Pena. Sean Rodriguez then hit a grounder to first baseman Lyle Overbay, who threw to second for an out.

Escobar, however, threw wildly back to first in an attempt to finish off a double play and Longoria scored from second.

Rafael Soriano struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth for his 42nd save, preserving the win for reliever Joaquin Benoit.

Benoit (1-2) claimed the victory despite giving up a two-run homer to Bautista in the seventh that forged an 8-8 tie.
