CINCINNATI, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Chris Heisey scored in the 12th inning as Pittsburgh catcher Chris Snyder was dropping a throw home Friday, giving Cincinnati a 4-3 win over the Pirates.
The Reds held a 3-1 lead from the third inning into the ninth but Pittsburgh scored twice to keep the game going. Cincinnati eventually scratched out a run that halted a five-game losing streak and boosted its lead over second-place St. Louis in the National League Central to six games. The Cardinals lost earlier in the evening to Atlanta.
Wil Ledezma (0-2) came on to start the 12th as Pittsburgh's fifth pitcher and gave up a bunt single to Heisey. Ledezma hit Joey Votto with a pitch and was replaced by Joel Hanrahan.
A single by Scott Rolen loaded the bases, bringing up Jonny Gomes. With the infield playing in, Gomes hit a grounder to shortstop Ronny Cedeno and he fired home in an attempt to keep the winning from scoring. Snyder, however, failed to corral the throw as Heisey slid across the plate. Snyder was charged with an error.
Jordan Smith (3-2) got the win by recording the final two outs in the top of the 12th.
