NASHVILLE, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Kevin Mawae, an eight-time all-pro center, is retiring from his playing career in the NFL.

The NFL Players Association said Friday Mawae was retiring after 16 years in the league. Mawae has been president of the association since March 2008.

Mawae, 39, spent the last four seasons with the Tennessee Titans. He broke into the league with Seattle, playing eight seasons for the Seahawks and four more with the New York Jets before joining the Titans.

Tennessee decided not to re-sign Mawae after last season even though he was chosen for his eighth Pro Bowl.

Mawae played in 235 games in his career and was selected to the Pro Bowl each season 1999-2004 and 2008-09. He was also named to the NFL's All-Decade Team for the 2000s.
