MLB: LA Angels 4, Cleveland 3 (16 innings)

ANAHEIM, Calif., Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A sacrifice fly by Jeff Mathis brought in Torii Hunter in the 16th inning Wednesday, giving the Los Angeles Angels a 4-3 win over Cleveland.

Los Angeles managed just six hits in the marathon contest, but one of them was a leadoff double by Hunter in the 16th against Hector Ambriz (0-2).

Ambriz, who was in his fourth inning of work, got Alberto Callaspo on a grounder to first while Hunter moved to third on the play. Mathis then hit the first pitch he saw deep enough to right to score Hunter.

Matt Palmer (1-1), called up from Class AAA this week, toiled the final three innings for the victory. Both sides used eight pitchers.

Los Angeles built a 3-1 lead through six innings thanks to a two-run blast by Mike Napoli and a solo shot from Peter Bourjos.

Cleveland trailed by a run going into the ninth but Jayson Nix had an RBI single to prolong the game. The Angels tried to end it in the bottom of the ninth but Juan Rivera failed to get down a suicide squeeze bunt and Callaspo was out at home to end the inning.

The Indians put a runner on second in the 10th, 11th, 13th and 14th innings without producing a run. The Angels did so in the 11th and 12th.
