Ga. receiver Green must sit out 3 games

ATHENS, Ga., Sept. 8 (UPI) -- University of Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green must sit out three more games for violating eligibility requirements, the NCAA ruled Wednesday.

The college sports governing body determined Green violated the NCAA agent benefits rules when he sold his Independence Bowl game jersey to a person considered to be a sports agent, The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.

Green has already missed the Bulldogs' season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette and NCAA officials ruled he must also miss the additional games despite giving the $1,000 he received for the jersey to charity.

Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity issued a statement indicating the school plans to appeal the decision to the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement.

"I want to apologize to my coaches, teammates and the Georgia fans for the mistake in judgment," Green said in a statement. "I very much regret all that has taken place and the distraction that's been caused."
