MLB: Los Angeles Angels 4, Seattle 2

SEATTLE, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Hideki Matsui put Los Angeles ahead with a two-run homer in the seventh Wednesday and the Angels went on to down Seattle 4-2.

Seattle starter Jason Vargas had retired eight straight batters heading into the seventh and struck out Torii Hunter to open that inning. Mike Napoli, however, doubled to center and, one out later, scored in front of Matsui's homer to give the Angels a 3-2 lead.

Alberto Callaspo added a solo shot in the eighth for Los Angeles.

The homer by Matsui made a winner out of Trevor Bell (2-4), who limited the Mariners to two runs despite allowing nine hits in six innings. He struck out six.

Jordan Walden and Kevin Jepsen combined to throw two innings of one-hit relief with four strikeouts and Fernando Rodney fanned two more in the ninth for his eighth save.

Vargas (9-8) allowed three runs on only four hits in seven innings to take the loss.
