Middle Tennessee quarterback suspended

MURFREESBORO, Tenn., Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Middle Tennessee State quarterback Dwight Dasher has been declared ineligible for competition because of a $1,500 loan, the school said Friday.

Middle Tennessee Athletics Director Chris Massaro said Dasher can practice with the team while he seeks reinstatement but will likely sit out some games.

Dasher allegedly accepted the loan in violation of NCAA rules.

"The overriding principle of this inquiry is to protect the university and its integrity, while maintaining fairness to all individuals involved, including Dwight Dasher," Massaro said in a statement posted on the school's Web site.

"While there are a lot of sides to the story involving student-athlete Dwight Dasher, all parties agree that there was a $1,500 loan. Therefore, due to a violation of the NCAA amateurism legislation, we are declaring Dwight Dasher ineligible for competition but will be seeking his reinstatement. While we are seeking reinstatement, Dasher will be allowed to practice. It is anticipated that Dasher will miss some competition."

Massaro said the "prescribed" penalty" for such violations is a "30 percent reduction" in games.

Dasher helped the Blue Raiders to a 10-3 record, including a win in the New Orleans Bowl, last season.
