Canada MDs call for mixed martial arts ban

NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- The Canadian Medical Association voted Wednesday to endorse a ban on professional mixed martial arts competitions.

An overwhelming majority -- 84 percent -- of the delegates to the national meeting supported the resolution, Postmedia News reported.

The original resolution was amended to remove recreational mixed martial arts. Some critics of the final resolution said they feared banning prizefighting mixed martial arts would lead to dangerous illegal matches.

The resolution was put forward by a group of doctors in British Columbia.

"I'm very happy with it passing," said Dr. Gordon Mackie, the physician who first proposed calling for a ban. "The right issues were raised and the consensus was strong."
